I was talking to a friend awhile back about how busy our lives seemed to be. I don’t know how it ramps up to warp speed so easily, but I know it’s not easy to keep a peaceful heart in the midst of it.
I had been struggling with how to school our youngest differently than our other seven kids because it’s what he needs, but it brings out my insecurities even after having homeschooled for 20 years. My husband had become fully self-employed, which was an adjustment, we had a grand baby due any day and it seemed like the laundry, meals and house kept whirling out of control every time I turned around. Did I ever feel on top of my game? For a fleeting moment and then BAM, I was back to feeling overwhelmed.
The natural conclusion to come to was that I was doing something drastically wrong. I had been pressing in and asking God for wisdom. I needed desperately to hear from Him. And one day He revealed something that gave me a clearer picture of what was really going on.
I was reading Psalm 107:22-31. This passage describes God’s sovereignty. The picture here is of skilled seamen. These guys KNEW what they were doing, BUT when God stirred up a storm with waves that rose “up to the sky, sinking down to the depths”, (can you picture these enormous waves?), these men were HELPLESS. In spite of the fact that this was probably what they knew and did BEST, all they could do was cry out to the Lord in their trouble…”and HE brought them out of their distress.”
It’s human nature to stop trusting HIM and start depending on our own strength and usually we don’t even know we’ve made the switch.
No matter how skilled I become at anything or how long I’ve been doing it, HE is greater still. God is sovereign over the storms of our life. Nothing touches us that doesn’t pass through HIs loving hands first. He is intentional and He has GOOD for us in EVERY circumstance and in EVERY storm.
So if you find yourself waging a battle today that feels like you should have won by now, be encouraged:
“Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, and He brought them out of their distress. He stilled the storm to a murmur and the waves of the sea were hushed. They rejoiced when the waves grew quiet and He guided them to the harbor they longed for. Let them give thanks to the Lord for His faithful love and His wonderful works for all humanity.” (vs. 28-31)
Let’s cry out to Him together in the midst of the raging storm. We know that He hears our cries and has compassion on us. When we feel helpless, we can say “YES” to God by giving thanks throughout our trials…thanks for His unspeakable gift of salvation and for his promise to work all things out for our good and His glory.
